4.1.1 Outline of the Analysis on the Architecture & Interior Design of the Airport (KLIA)

Exterior
Drop Off Point

Hypar Roof Structure

-“Airport in A Forest, Forest in A Airport” concept is implemented in the airport.
-The impressive architecture of the airport was built in Sepang, surrounded by a forest and palm tree plantation. Hence, the forms of the airport are derived from the local palm tree.
-The form of the exterior gives off a local identity of Islamic domes to overseas travelers as well as local with its traditional styles.
-Stainless steels structure and modern materials created with the rendering of mosque-inspired architecture created a contrast between the lush green forest and airport hence creating a dramatic effect on the users.
-Uses of stilts with organic design of roof structure can reduce the heat of the drop-off area and also provide a better ventilation. 40.3% agreed that the spaces are well ventilated.
-The stilts opened up the spaces and allow breeze to ventilate the drop-off and pick up area hence provide a comfortable temperature to the user.
-The facade was designed with rational grids with symmetry and glazed glasses to provide a better view and reduce the indoor temperature (increase comfortability). Based on the survey, over 50% of the users found that the temperature in the airport is cool and comfortable.
-Extensive uses of glazed elevation and skylights to allow more natural lighting.

Terminal
Main Terminal with Hypar Roof Structure & Glazed Elevation

Triangular Keel Trusses

-Consists of six levels which the departure for both domestic and international flights are located at the highest level.
-Grand departure concourse with distinctive materials of ceiling and floor.
-Design of the ceiling is emphasized on the hypar roof shell with wood finishing steel plate panels.
-Multicoloured granite flooring to show the motif of local traditional weaving. Granite flooring also provides comfortability as it is an excellent heat sink and makes the building cooler.
-The hypar roof shells are connected together using open triangular keel trusses and glazed glasses. The exposed structure also acted as skylight as it allows maximum natural lighting to penetrate the terminal.
-Departure concourse is connected to the observation deck on the contact pier and provide an experience for the user who sends off their family members at the airport. Eg: Family member can track along the user who checked in and passed through the security pass via the bridge on contact pier to the observation deck. The bridge was built with stainless steels structure and glasses to provide the view below.

Observation Deck with Seating Areas

-Concept and forms of the contact pier & Satellite building were based on the aircraft services. The gentle curve was used with dynamic raked columns to support the roof.
-Consisted of three levels and one level of the observation deck.
-Roof structure supported by inclined bow-string trusses and exposed pin-jointed raking tubular columns (represent the palm tree structure in an abstract manner but simultaneously protrude a high technology image).
-Uses of patterned granite flooring & wood finishing steel plate panels.
-High ceiling design supported by columns with aluminum panels. Experience: Sense of freedom and tend to explore more in the grand and spacious spaces.
-Extensive uses of glazed glasses on the elevation and also skylight to provide natural lighting.
Survey: Users are strongly agreed with the sufficient natural lighting provided with comfortable temperature in the contact pier.

Satellite Building
Forest in the Airport

Structure of the Roof and Natural Lighting

-Connected to the contact pier via aerotrain.
-Traditional local styles were shown with the overhanging eaves with the mixture of the modern styles with the generous uses of steel structure and glazed skylights to allow natural lighting. Experience: Travelers can get more knowledge to the local architectural styles and motif while enjoying the grand view of the airport.
-A forest garden in the satellite building to implement the concept of “Airport in the Forest, Forest in A Airport”. Can be aesthetic but at the same time provide green awareness to the all the travelers and user. Experience: Can walk in the garden while waiting for the flight instead of just shopping in the airport and enjoy the fresh cool air.
